I do design work for my long time friends metal fabrication business, we both did a three year long AWS structural welding program in high school and now live 5 minutes from each other. His business is primarily fabricating armor for land cruisers, 100 and 80 series, as well as some custom fab for local manufacturers. He got a good deal on a triple locked 93' 80 series we intended to armor, lift and wheel.

Previously, on the 100 series, we measured everything by hand with angle finders then I made the design in solidworks then we had a local vendor laser cut and bend. For the 80 series we thought we would try to get it laser scanned and make a model in solidworks. Previously it took several iterations, roughly three, to get the 100 series where we wanted it. I contacted the local community college that had a blue light scanner, met them at a friend's shop with a lift and scanned the front and rear frame.

Once I received the model from the community college I designed the front and rear bumpers using solidworks. Theodel was an stl and required some cleanup of fragments. After deleting fragments the 3d scan was very convenient to locate the frame holes for mounting and fender location, typically I would have to guess and check.

It took us two iterations but I am very happy with the product. It looks good, sits high and tight and is made from a 3/16 skin and 1/4 frame. Garret has better pictures and videos on his Instagram
